a sheared key would make it hard to start all the time.... or not at all.

I am NOT familiar with THAT engine, but the problem might be the manner in which the engine was shut down. Was it running at high RPM and shut off with the dead man or ignition switch?
As the engine coasts down, fuel is still being drawn into the cylinder, but it is no longer firing. If you can turn off the fuel to shut it down that would probably solve the problem, but I doubt if that is possible. You are sitting on the mower and cannot reach the fuel shut off and getting off would also shut it down. Try reducing the RPM to idle before shutting down. Also too much oil in the engine crankcase could so the same thing. Check that there isn't too much oil. If the oil level is ok, the I would bet that when it shuts down because you ran out of gas, that it would restart just fine.

I have that Snapper too, with the same problem. Other than that starting problem, it has been a pretty good mower for ten years. If I have to stop, I let it cool down 15 minutes, and get a beer. Somethings in life you just have to accept, be patient, and realize there may be a purpose for it.

You hit something with the blade huh?

You partialy sheared the flywheel key at the crank shaft which has advanced the timing. The engine is fireing before TDC.

You will need to have the shear key replaced.
