Okay, do they not teach any basic arithmetic in school anymore?
This is pretty basic grade 4 stuff.

Since the 2 fractions have different denominators (that's the number in the bottom of the / part), you have to calculate what each fraction would be if they both had the same denominator - multiply the 4 and the 8 together to get 32.
Multiply each full number by 32, so the 7 = 224/32 and the 3 = 96/32.

Therefore 7 1/4 = 225/32 and 3 7/8 = 103/32
And the answer is (225-103) / 32 = 122/32 = 3 26/32, or 3.812

welll you can mulitply the 7 by the denominator of 1/4 .... and that will give you the top plus the 1 ... sooo 7*4 = 28 and 28 +1 = 29 soo you have 29 /4 which is the same are 29*2 / 4*2 and that is 58/8 now, you also want to do the same type of thing with the other fraction, soo 3*8 = 24 , 24 +7 = 31 so now you have (58/8) - (31/8) , the deminators are the same... sooo you can just subtract the numerators : and you get 27/8
