You can take Amtrak. From San Diego take the Pacific Surfliner to Union Station (or you can take the Metrolink; Metrolink's cheaper, but not as nice), at Union Station hop on the Coast Starlight to Salinas, then take a bus the rest of the way. It'll take you 11-15 hours to get there, including waits between trains/buses.

Or, you can take Greyhound from San Diego to Salinas, and then take another bus from Salinas to Monterey. Greyhound isn't as luxurious as Amtrak, since Amtrak has spacious seats, a snack car, and great scenery along the way, and Greyhound takes about the same amount of time as Amtrak, 11-15 hours depending on which bus you choose.

They're about the same amount of money. Assuming you're coming from San Diego proper, assume about $55+bus fare for Greyhound, and $63 and up for Amtrak (which includes bus fare). It'll cost you less if you're traveling from further north (say, Oceanside) to Monterey. It'll also be much more convenient for you if you can have someone pick you up at Salinas to avoid that last leg of the trip.

Happy traveling!

I think the AMTRAK goes to monterrey. There are other train services here too (the coaster train). Best way is to call the San Diego Transit hotline at 1-800-COMMUTE

They will assist you in what trains to take, the times/days etc.

Good Luck!

I copied and pasted this from an answer that I gave another poster who asked a similar question. It is by no means the most efficient route. If you do it in anything under a month then it will take your body and brain about a week to recover. In all cases use rental cars with unlimited mileage that burn regular low octane gas and switch out cars as needed ======>>>>>>> Hard Q Rent a car for two months picking -up and returning to ATL Grab a Rand McNally and do this as a very rough route outline Use mapquest et al for general directions But ignore their totally unrealistic point to point times and Yes they will accept 3 letter airport codes Loop 1 >Westbound ATL Chattanooga TN Birmingham AL Shreveport LA Dallas TX Amarillo TX Albuquerque NM GCN LAX Loop 1 East bound LAX LAS DEN MCI OKC Memphis TN Nashville TN Louisville KY Charlottesville VA Washington DC Savanah GA St Augustine FL ATL Return the car and pick up another one and do loop #2 Northbound ATL Ashville NC Roanaoke VA Wilkes Barre PA Hartford CT Newport RI Plymouth MA Portland ME North Conway NH Heading west >>>> Barre VT Lake Placid NY Niagara Falls NY Dearborn MI St Ignace MI MSP Fargo ND Rapid City SD SEA SFO Heading east and then south ORD JFK PHL Wilmington DE Norfolk VA ATL Return car # 2 (or 3) If I did that correctly that gets you thru all 48 conterminous states
