The original one going way back was actually quite gruesome - and tended to freak children out a little - the wicked step sisters were so desperate to wear the slipper that they cut their corns, bunions and toes off with a pair of scissors to try and fit.
Evidently the prince was a little dense and would not spot such a cunning ruse. Anyway, the story goes that the slipper filled with blood and still would not fit.
As an aside, the slippers were NOT made of glass, this comes from a dodgy translation from the original language French - verre (glass) being confused with vaire (fur).

LH, I'm not sure if you mean children's stories based on the Cinderella theme. If you do, then the change is happening because people no longer believe that girls should focus on a man saving them from the bad things in their lives. Most people realize that they're going to have to be able to take care of themselves. So they want their children to be as strong and self-sufficient as possible. That's why you see more and more "Cinderella" type stories with a different kind of heroine.

They can't find the right prince. A lot of today's royalty liked to be kept and Cinderella is tired of all this cleaning after people.

The story gets old with "the new genaration" around, so they modify it because it is too good of a story to just leave alone.
