Waning and waxing of the moon has to do with whether the moon is "coming from" or "going to" the full moon.

A waxing moon is in the process of going from new moon to full moon and a waning moon is going from full to new.

This has already been explained correctly but if those were confusing try thinking of it like this:

If you look at the moon one night, and then a couple nights later it is "bigger" (more is lit up) then it is waxing. When it is becoming more full it is waxing, when it was just full and is now becoming less full it is waning.

I remember it by "wax on" and "waning away"

To know what the moon is without watching the sky, you can look at a calender that shows moon phases.
The days after the new moon but before a full moon are waxing (the moon will get bigger since it is becoming a full moon) and the days after a full moon but before a new moon will be waning.

GL with your spells, I was into that too when I was your age :)

Waxing is when the moon is going from new to full (waxing means increasing) Waning is when the moon is going from full to new (waning means decreasing).

Each is a 14 Day cycle. The Moon is waxing until full, then wanes until new. You have the quarters and the full/new inbetween. SO.

Full
7 days waning
last quarter
7 days waning
new moon
7 days waxing
first quarter
7 days waxing
full moon

Simple, right?

A waxing moon is growing, as from new moon to full moon. A waning moon is shrinking, as from full moon to the next new moon.

Your spells will work equally well regardless of the phase of the moon. Don't worry about it.

This is the SCIENCE section, where spell books are not to be discussed.

Please go to "Myths and Folklore" or "Magic."

Real quick, okay?
