Simple.
It's an intermittent fault isn't it. Just today you were driving at what you thought was 35mph and all of a sudden the speedo flickered and then settled on nearly 50. As such it was under-reading by (in this example) 30%
If you TELL the mechanic what happened and then ask him to check all the connections (loosen it etc etc) then also ask him to jot on the bill "repair to intermittent fault on speedometer" HE is covered - as he is taking you at your word - and happy to earn a few bob in cleaning/ tightening connections - and no-one can PROVE you fif not have an intermittent connection.
As for being illegal. he did not say it was for an illegal act - I am working on the basis that he wants to this to confuse a friend as part of a "life changing" practical joke. blah blah blah :)

You do know that unless its only a couple of miles an hour it wont matter in court. If you were exceeding by more than 20 the Judges recognize that more that 90 % of drivers can estimate their speed to within 10 mph without the use of their speedometer. This may prove detrimental to what you sound like your doing. You best bet would be to try to get the ticket reduced. I'm not sure of you're entire situation, but you'll most likely spend more doing the damage and repairing than paying the ticket...Plus even if you do get a "faulty" speedometer fixed, you can still get convicted as guilty, then you're doubly in the hole.

It sounds like you have gotten an outrageous speeding ticket and need to have a broken speedometer. I would say to get to the connection of where it connects to the speedometer gauge and try to spin it as far as it will go so that it will break and just go around the gauge, or you could make it mess up at the transmission you know sort of like half in and out so that sometimes it reads and sometimes it does not. Other than that all i can say is to get a mechanic to lie for you

To tamper with a speedometer /odometer is a Federal offense and punishable by up to 5 yrs in the Pen. What will throw off your speedo is taller tires or shorter tires . Have you changed either way to make it sportier. Go to a speedo shop and have it checked but first call to see which way would make your speedo read slower than indicated and change the tires or the final drive ratio-if you had a different gear put in the tranny to make it come off the line faster or to give it a higher top speed this too would throw off the speedo reading. My truck had a different rearend in it and at 40mph I was doing 55 mph. Good Luck

I know you have alot of answers, but I'll give mine as well. Basically its like this, the vehicle speed sensor does not measure actual ground speed, only the RPM's of the drive force output. The computer is told that so many turn of the transmission mean so many turn of the wheels, and it also knows how far you will go for each turn of the wheel, thus it can determine how fast you are traveling. Bigger tires will not change how many times your wheels turn, but, with the larger circumference, they will travel a further distance on each turn as they have more area around the edge. Thus you will actually travel further then the computer thinks you are, and that means you are going faster. Try this: Take a Quarter and a Nickel, put a small mark on each near the edge. Place the nickel on a piece of paper, mark where the mark is on the paper, roll it 1 full turn and mark where the mark is now an measure the distance between them. Do the exact same for the Quarter, the distance you measure will be further. Now imagine the stock tires are the nickel, and then you put a Quarter on there, now, for each turn of the wheel, you travel further, thus meaning you are traveling faster then the computer thinks you are.

Could always change the tire size enough to get the amount of error you want. Smaller tires will read faster on speedo than actual speed. Bigger tires will read slow on speedo.

Not only is what your asking hard to do, its a felony. Its illegal for me to tell you how to do it, and its illegal for you to attempt the modification, for the purposes of lying to a court of law.
