Verbs are the most important part of speech. There are action verbs and linking verbs. Run, jump, eat, talk are examples of the many action verbs. Linking verbs, also known as state of being verbs, are verbs such as become, is, are, was, and were. Verbs associated with the senses of touch, taste, sight, smell, and hearing are sometimes action verbs and sometimes linking verbs. A grammar book will give you more details.

Most verbs show action--like kick, write, yawn, or scream. Several other posters have given other examples.
Verbs can also tell a state of being. The most common state of being verb is "to be", which has forms like am, are, and is in the present tense and was and were in the past tense. Other state of being verbs include seem, appear, and become.
