I don't remember them doing this with my first baby 3 years ago but when I had my baby 2.5 weeks ago they mashed on my belly in a little bit of a top to bottom movement...like they were pushing the top of my uterus downward while still smushing it in. I havn't bled as heavy for as long with this baby, and I think it must have something to do with the nurse pushing a lot of the blood out manually. Almost 24 hours after my birth my uterus had already contracted down to almost the top of my pubic bone.

Yes it is true..I had a c-section and i was put to sleep but when i woke up 2 nurses where standing on each side of the bed and one was pushing on my stomach so hard and i said what are you doing? (But not nice like that, i cussed her) Then i grabbed her hands and she said we have to do this to get your uterus back down to size. But it does hurt. Just try to take deep breaths and just bare it..That is all you can do.
Good luck

Yes they do and it's VERY painful. However, they do it to help your body expel all the crap that's left called "after birth". Also, massaging the stomach helps it go away.

They do this to massage your uterus to make sure it's shrinking properly. It's uncomfortable.

They do this so that it will shrink back up, and yes, it is kind of uncomfortable.
