Can you play your regular ps1 and ps2 games on a ps3 system?

Now being that this system is top of the line, i'm assuming you can play your ps1 and ps2 games, is it true?

I have had the same question myself.
In my own investigation the original plan of Sony was to make sure that the PS3 was 100% backwards compatible thus allowing previous versions software to work on the new platform. The corporate response from Sony says yes but I came across a website with a story from Japan saying there were a ton of people complaining to Sony about the fact that their PS3 does not support their older games. Follow-up stories seem to indicate that the issue had been resolved prior to the North American launch of the PS3.
The true answer can only be found from someone who currently owns a PS3 and a selection of PS1 and PS2 software to try with it. The Xbox 360 for example does not currently support every Xbox title but they have made it a company goal to provide the necessary code upgrades for every one of the original Xbox games so they can be played on the 360.
I'll be watching this question to see if anyone can provide a definite answer.

Yes...however 200 out of over 1000 playstation2 games CANNOT play on the PS3. I'm not sure which ones don't play...but its been causing some problems and Sony said they won't fix it at this time.

LIKE THE INDIVIDUALS SAID ABOVE, THE PS3 WILL UPCONVERT TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. IT WILL ALWAYS LOOK BETTER TO PLAY A PS3 GAME ON PS3 SINCE MOST OF THE GAMES THAT ARE COMING OUT NOW ARE DEVELOPED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HDTVS THAT ARE BECOMING VERY POPULAR. ALSO TO SEE THE PS3 IN HD YOU NEED A HDMI (OR EQUIVALENT) CABLE FROM THE PS3 TO THE HDTV, THE HDMI CABLE WILL GIVE YOU THE BEST QUALITY IN SOUND AND PICTURE AVAILABLE
