I have a 1983 Jeep 4X4 with a 360 A.M.C. engine. I would like to put the engine (360A.M.C.) into a 1983 Ford f-150 4x4 with a 4-speed manual transmission. I would like to keep the manual transmission, is this possible? How? Any help would be great. Thank you.

You really want to waste a good 360 amc to put into an 83 ford? I you're going to have to modify motor mounts, And really have to work hard on modifying the bell housing. Frankly, seems like you'd be better off saving that 360 for a good CJ and find a good 351 for the Ford. I'm not sure if the tranny will mate up, because I dont know what you're running now. I would start by checking the aftermarket and seeing whats available to make every thing fit. Otherwise you'll have to make the parts yourself. Sounds very interesting though if you get it done....please post pics somewhere, they'd be interesting to see.

It is possible to buy an adapter plate to match the transmission to the back of the engine, -- I don't know where you can buy them, but any "hotrod" enthusiast can probably tell you where to get it! However by the time you get done "adapting" with all the other stuff you will have to buy to go along with it, you are probalbly going to be near $300 in parts!

If you have open axles in front end of both vehicles, - it might be simpler to change transmission-transfer case and all, and "cut the axles and weld right ends on to match Ford, (this will require precise measurements, and removing axle shafts &driveshaft and taking to a machine shop to have welded and balanced (not as expensive, but still not cheap!) I am assuming that you don't have electronic fuel injection in ford now (or on Jeep engine), as you would then have to change computer systems also!

I would try to get somewhere where I could see both transmissions, and both engines at mating areas, -- there is a very remote chance that AMC has sub-contracted transmission work from Ford (a lot of AMC stuff - especially electrics, - came from Ford about that time)! In which chance, - the bell housing may be removeable, and swap from one to the other (because of standard transmission) A lot of standard transmissions bolt onto the bell housing, instead of being integral part like an automatic!

In short, I agree with the "DON'T!" answer. The AMC 360 and the Ford 360 are NOT the same, and are not interchangeable. It would simply be way more work than it's worth, although I've seen more labor intensive stuff done than this. I've seen a late 70's/early 80's Chevy pickup converted to a Perkins Diesel with a Clark transmission...YES, really! I also know a guy who took an entire two-wheel drive Dodge cab, and put it on a four-wheel drive dodge frame, which mean extensive modification of the floor board, as well. Hey, if you love the AMC engine, and your Ford vehicle, then, well...I guess you gotta love 'em both a lot to do that amount of work!
