I have never used any video editing software and was going to start by trying to use windows movie maker. I don't know how to connect the vcr to the pc. Is there a standard usb to av wire connection cable that I need for windows to recognize my vcr or camcorder. It is an analog camcorder. Is it better to buy different software that comes with the physical connection hardware? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm interested in transferring analog video from vcr/camcorder to dvd and also editing (making highlights from transferred video).

Check first to see if it is compatable with computers, if not, then you can buy what is called a TV card. It is a card with the standard red, yellow and white RCA jacks. It goes inside your computer as a video card. Anything that needs to be hooked up using RCA jacks, can then be hooked up to your computer. DVD player, VCR, camcorder, tape Dec, and so on. A good software I reccommend is called Roxio Easy Media Creator. It is great for making home movie DVDs and music CD's.
