It depends on what sort of algae eater he is. Pelco are mostly nocturnal and prefer to hide during the day. Oto, and true siamese algae eaters just like to hide. Chinese algae eaters, and false siamese algae eaters don't hide as much, but still like to hide when they aren't acting nuts. If you don't have some place for him to hide it may just be the only place he feels safe. If he has other hiding spot he's likely too cold. Check the temp most fish other than gold fish need temps in the 75-82 range.

algea eater prefer dark areas, either at the bottom of the tank, or behind/ inside whatever you have in there for them to go to. as for the heater, heat and light both help the growth of algea, so the greatest concentration of algea would be there

It may be searching for a possible comfort zone. Resting and hiding or seeking warmth. Is your tank crowded? They do like to hide and eat at night. Some people buy artificial places for them to hide at night. A cheaper hiding place can be a piece of PVC pipe that plumbers use. If you choose the latter make sure it's large enough for your fish.

They only come out and clean in the dark, during the day or when the light is on they hide. Supply a shelter for him for during the day. Some kind of fishtank display big enough for him.

The tiniest are snails! heavily my aunt exchange into telling me that her tank exchange into thoroughly green, she could not even see her fish, she had like a 10 gal, somebody she knew had snails and gave her 3, she went to mattress and while she awoke her tank exchange into spotless! different algae eaters could be Otto Catfish, they're super lovable and that they improve to a optimum of two inches, they decide to stay with communities of three or greater.

Thats probably just his way of hiding. They have a tendency to hide behind things or under things. If you dont already have some wood, rocks, or plants in your tank, you may want to invest in it.
