An EdD is equal to a PhD because both degrees are at the doctoral level. An EdD is just a specialized doctoral degree, in the same way that a JD is a law degree or a DBA is a Doctor of Business Administration. You can have a PHD in Education, or a PHD in Business Administration.

Both get called "doctor" in the end.
Typically, to get a PhD you have to do original research, but you don't to get an EdD. However, that's not true at all schools - some (such as the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where I'm working on my EdD) make you do original research just like it was a PhD. So it depends on the school.

My program (in the counseling field under the umbrella of the school of education) offers both Ed.D. and Ph.D. The coursework for both degrees is identical, the Ed.D. is just the doctorate that is more prevalent in educational settings, I think. For example, the district superintendent for the district where I attended K-12 had an Ed.D. instead of a Ph.D.
