I keep wondering what I should do the next time it comes around.

Yes you can, that is part of you lineage and nationality that you relate to. Thus, the entire point of the census is to take into account such factors. You would be disadvantaging the entire purpose of the census were you not to check that you are of Irish descent.

Scotch-irish emigrated from Scotland to Ireland (Ulster area) bringing protestantism with them..then lots of them migrated to the midwest and Northeast.

Maybe it'd be safer if you didn't check off either one

I don't recall the census asking where my ancestors came from. Usually if you are from that descent, you are Caucasian.

Where were you BORN.
NOT the birth place of your parents, grandparents, the flaming dog, cat or any other relative!
Or were you born simultaneously in Scotland and Ireland?
