It all starts in 1660, when the English Civil War results in the American colonies basically running themselves, so that when the British tried to reassert control in 1770, the Americans got mad. Mad enough to fight.

French & Indian War - creates British debt.
Stamp Act - Imposed to pay down British debt. Rescinded when Americans complain.
Tea Tax - Imposed to pay down British debt.
Boston Tea Party - dumps tea to protest tax.
British impose martial law on Boston to enforce the laws.
Minutemen start training.
British send army to Concord to confiscate illegal ammunition.
April 16, 1775 - Paul Revere rides to warn Maxssachusetts Minutemen that British are coming to Concord.
April 17, 1775 - Some Minutemen assemble at Lexington to stop British. British arrive and fire, killing several Americans.
April 17, 1775 - Minutemen in Concord stop British from reaching ammunition, then Minutemen from all over Massachusetts shoot at the British all the way back to Boston.
April - June 1775 - Other 12 colonies send an army under George Washington to Boston to keep the British from leaving.
Other high points: Battle of Saratoga, Battle of Trenton, Battles of Cowpens & Kings Mountain, Battle of Yorktown.
