John Coltrane died of liver cancer on June 17, 1967. His heavy heroin and alcohol use in the 1940s and 1950s probably were the root causes. Heavy drinking in particular can cause liver damage. In a 1968 interview Albert Ayler revealed that Coltrane was consulting a Hindu meditative healer for his illness instead of western medicine, though conventional treatment may have been ineffective regardless.
