Bettas are awesome fish, I'd say it would live just fine in a 2.5 gallon tank.
But.....I've had bad experiences buying pets for friends.
Just a case scenario but:
Lets say she doesn't take care of it and you slowly watch it die. That happened to me once and it bugged the crap out of me.
I say take her with you and let her pick everything out herself. She will be sure to like it if she picks it out.
oh btw:
You should never put a betta, especially a male, together with other aggressive fish. This includes male bettas. While you can keep multiple females together (provided proper environment), you can NOT keep a male and a female together (unless you are specifically trying to spawn them) or multiple males. Some have been known to keep multiple males together in extremely large tanks with LOTS of plant life and hiding spaces, but they are still going to attack each other if they come into each other's territory.
You can keep multiple female bettas in a tank together, provided that you give them LOTS of hiding places (plants, rocks to go under, etc). But you will usually get at least one aggressive/dominate female. I have 3 in a 10-gallon tank and they still nip at each other sometimes. I find it much easier to simply use a divided tank to house multiple bettas.

Keep in mind the betta. If you add a cory, it will do better with others of their species, 3 to 5 of them. There size could reach 1.5 to 2.5 inches. They have a flat bottom so they can stay close to the bottom of the tank. They tend to be nocturnal. They like to forage and clean the tanks bottom surface but add a little extra food for them. Maybe give the cory something different to add to their diet every now and then. And with the shrimp things might get a little crowded in there. You will need air, filter, and thermometer, and maybe a heater. The Betta can do fine on its on. You could buy a 10 gallon tank alone for around 8$.

First, if the Pleco has stopped becoming at 5 inches, it extremely is probable stunted (meaning you're killing it except you progression it to the fifty 5 gallon tank). in case you choose for livebearers, yet you do no longer choose for infants, only get all adult males. This works with all livebearers because of the fact all of them have sexual dimorphism (adult males have extra suitable tails [Guppies] or pointed tails [Mollies, Platties, and Swordtails]). in case you needed male Guppies, you will have approximately 15 (in the event that they are the only fish interior the tank), or for Plattiesor Swordtails, you will have approximately 7 (in the event that they are the only fish). stable success with the hot fish! additionally, because of the fact Guppies are very skinny, clean, non violent fish, the only inch of fish in step with gallon of water rule (which could on no account be utilized to fish keeping) isn't proper. Guppies do no longer combat over territory so 15, there could be no problems with crowding. Platties and Swordtails are a sprint distinctive because of the fact they seem to be somewhat messier and bigger, so they choose for extra area. Nosoop4u

How neat that you want to do that for your friend! That's very nice of you.
How about this though? What if you went to your local pet store and purchased a gift card for her and let her pick out her own fish? Maybe get your other friends involved and they can buy her a book to read all about her new pet.
I hope your friend has a great birthday and enjoys her new fish!!! Good luck!

The cory and shrimp would not do well in a bowl because it lacks filtration and aeration. One, single betta would probably survive that size container, provided it was kept clean and in a steady temperature.

Get her a gold fish. They are cold water so you don't have to worry about a heater. You only need to get clean water once a week and do not need aeration. Just feed and enjoy! Get a bowl they seem to love bowls.

beta fish are a good choice, but if you want to get her more than one or if she wants to get another one then that wouldn't be a good choice cuz the beta will kill the other one. so get something like a goldfish. Sucker fish are really good ideas too cuz they are really easy to take care of and you don't have to feed them hardly anything cuz they mostly feed off of the algae. those would be the best choices.

beta fish i think are the easiest to care for and are a lot tougher so they don't require as many water changes
