I live in a super small town in Southwestern Virginia, and the county I reside in is a very depressed area with nothing to do and not much job opportunity. In fact it took me years to land some recent jobs. In my town it's not only hard to get a job but it's hard to keep one. The factories and industries we have lay people off all the time. And on top of that we don't have many businesses that require good education. In fact most of our businesses are from one extreme to the other; they either don't require high school or just a GED at the very least, or 2-4+ years of college. I am going to a local community college myself to get certified in office type work. But anyway, I wanted to know if there's anyone else out there living in an area that is still depressed from our small economic depression George Bush put us in.

The economy of the nation is strong. Maybe your town is faced with problems similar to mine. Look around after reading this and think about it..................
Our population is 303 ( you think your super small)
We have no factories with in 17 miles .
Of our population 75% of it is over the age of retirement.
Most (89% ) have only a high school education.
We have a fire company that has 6 members - 2/3 don't live in town.
Our town council gets funding from the state and federal government for a children's park, new sewage , highways (one going through the center of town) and sidewalks.
Here is a list of businesses in town 1 bar, 2 nursing homes and a (family run)garage/hardware store - a lot of chance for growth there.
Our tax base is low but any time a new development or business looks at land for anything the council says " you don't want to build here" or "it will increase crime" or this good one "it will bring in new people " . So they keep everything out as in a Borough the council has final say on those matter and the elected mayor can do nothing but listen to people complain that nothing is improving and their children/grandchildren are moving away.

So instead of blaming Bush how about looking around at your own leadership. If you are a town , borough , city or municipality you have a local government .

Hello. I live in a small town in north central Idaho. We are dying here too. Subsidized Canadian imports of grain, beef, and lumber undercutting our products, and an insane amount of new environmental laws and lawsuits have nearly wiped out all of our major industries here. Also remember trickle down theory. One unemployed industry person, creates approximately four unemployed service or support people. When one sawmill here thought about laying off one shift, most of the other businesses in town immediately started laying off people. One example- the nice lady at the pizza joint here lost her job because of Canadian trade policy. Most of the ignorant public will never see the connection. One more note- in the last election it did not matter who won, the economy would have crashed either way. We are seeing Bush's plan in action, and Kerry wanted even more environmentalist insanity to cripple our economy.

Yes. Most family stores were put out by Wal mart, Lowe's, etc.. Factories closed. clothing stores closed, shoe stores closed, meat plants hire illegals. Except for the schools and colleges and the hospital, most educated end up moving to get a good job. People that made good money, now work two jobs just to get by. To bad we didn't all have the money to invest in China.
