We didn't check it before buying because we bought it from a friend. The only thing that my husband did that he probably shouldn't have was lay it down in the back of his truck for delivery. It was probably down for about 30 minutes max. We left it sit upright for 2 days before pluggin it in.

While it is customary never to put a refrigerator on its side, the coolant could have leaked out while your friend had it unplugged in his garage (if he did). Fridges stored for a while sometimes leak coolant through pinholes that develop in the coils. Whatever, you need coolant.

Long shot here, but maybe it needs a new thermostat?

I do know that you shouldn't have any more refrigerant put into it. The only way that refrigerant can escape the system is through a leak. Therefore, if you have more refrigerant (freon) put in, it will simply leak out. Any appliance repair person who tries to recharge the system without repairing the leak is ripping you off.

Dont give up yet. Unplug it and wait 1 more day. If it still doesn't work, then you've got a bad deal.
Hopefully your hubby didn't lay it on its coils and rupture a line.

if your not sure if it worked before you bought it, I'd guess the freon leaked out, or a long shot, the evaporator fan is not turning or the condenser coil is plugged with dust.
