It's where the plant's roots grow. They anchor the plant, gather nutrients, and absorb water in and from the soil. Plants are fairly particular about where to sink their feet and the proper soil makes the difference in life and death, or at least between thriving and struggling.
It is also what you stand on so you don't fall in a hole.

Soil is a very important part of many industries and businesses. If we had no soil we would have no need for cleaning products like brooms, washing machines and even hand soap. There would be no need for soil moving equipment like shovels and even bulldozers! Imagine all the people that would be out of work. Soil is very important indeed.
