Some girls feel the need to do that because of the effect the media has on them. An example would be the show Gossip Girl when one of them has a huge 16th birthday party it makes other girls think " hey if I throw a huge and expensive party maybe I can be like her and have lots of friends!". Get my point? LOL

What makes you think that your daughter HAS to have a certain kind of birthday party and at a certain age? I have not seen an instruction book for raising teenagers that every family is able to follow. Don't believe everything your daughter says, is number one instruction in my book.

I believe this is a Southern USA tradition of a girl "coming out" in society.. the age at which she is allowed to date.
