Back when I was in high school, (1998-2002) if you got your left cartilage pierced you were straight, right you were gay. And after reading somebody's questions, apparently it still applies, and not just to ear cartilage but to eyebrows and possibly the earlobe. So what do you think of this, do you think it's stupid and somebody should chose either side they like despite their sexuality and where did this fashion rule come from? To my knowledge it's been around since 2000-2001.

FYI: I have no piercings but one hole in each ear lobe and I rarely wear jewelry.

The connection between piercings and sexual orientation are a thing of the past...period. Most people who say otherwise are simply trying to get some kind of reaction.

Besides, anymore, people are seeing that one earring is pretty much lopsided looking. More guys have both ears pierced than just one because it looks awkward with only one, regardless of the side.

Where the right/left gay/straight thing used to exist as an indicator with earrings, itnever applied to other piercings per se. The remainder of the visible piercings grew in popularity in the early to mid 90's where they were for the sake of the piercing and had nothing to do with orientation. Which side of your nose or which eyebrow made no difference. The questions that were frequently asked regarding which nostril or which eyebrow meant gay or straight were simply carryovers from the obsolete ear lobe association.

Where I'm from, that rule hasn't really applied since the late 80s or early 90s. Here, people just get pierced however and wherever they want. No one thinks much of it.

When I was really little (late 80s), my uncle (teen at the time) and his friends snuck and pierced their ears, and I remember the rule applying then even though I didn't know what homosexuality was at the time. I just remember them being extremely concerned with which side to pierce and years later I found out why.
