They go to Valinor, the homeland of the Elves. All the ring bearers are deserving of the honour, to live out eternity in peace. Tolkien's book describes this much better than I could, but Jackson had time against him. For starters the ship Frodo left on was not the last, later after many years of being Mayor of the shire, and after his wife Rosie died, Samwise Gamgee also leaves the shire to be with Frodo in Valinor, he has the honour also as he took the ring from Frodo, when he believed he was dead from the sting of the spider Shelob.

The 'Elf-Heaven' you describe is the continent of Aman, the main section where everyone resides in is Valinor. The Elves, the Maiar and the Valar with special guests, eg: Tuor, Frodo, Sam, etc. all live there in this unchanging, timeless, bliss. It is a land of plenty, beauty and where you can literally bump into gods. It is the Elves homeland before they went to live in Middle Earth (well actually they came from Cuivenen in ME, but for the sake of this post let's just say Valinor was their homeland). Like the other poster said, it doesn't exist in the ordinary world/realm, it's on another plane of existence that only the Elves and the divine can reach. It used to belong in the ordinary world until some Men of the Numenor Race decided to take it upon themselves to invade Valinor, in response to this invasion, these Men were supposedly buried alive as the continent was lifted from the ordinary world into this new plane by Eru- the big boss God of everything. As for what one does in Valinor- well depends really. Special guests like Frodo and Sam would of enjoyed exploring the area, Gandalf who is really a Maiar would of went to many reunion parties, as would many Elves who spent most of their lives in ME. As for the other Maiar and Valar they would of kept on maintaing, watching and guarding the world- being the godly beings that they are. The Elves who have always lived in Valinor, would of always done what they have done- sew, build, paint, whatever strikes their fancy. They have all time to do whatever they want as long as it's doing good, of course.

They were going to Valinor. Gandalf, as a wizard, was only in Middle Earth, basically to win the war of the Ring. Having done so, he departed to the Blessed Realm. Frodo and Bilbo both went having been given special passage because of their status as Ringbearers. Frodo was mainly allowed to go because he had been to deeply hurt bearing the Ring to remain in any sort of peace in Middle Earth.
(and yes, lance, Gandalf was a ringbearer. He had Narya, the Ring of Fire, one of the Three.)

They go off to trhe special land. it's kinda like Heaven, but *most* of the ring-bearers go there, cause they bloody deserve it.
Not all the Ring Bearers go. Sam was a ring bearer. only for a short amount of time, but Frodo certainly was screwed up by carrying that ring, so they let him go to the Elve land, which as i said is kinda like heaven. The books, explain it much better that Jackson. Not to detract from Jacksons interpratation, but you can't beat the original can you?

I took it to be that the journey had taken lots from them and that their part in the story was over, hence Frodo giving Sam the book to finish.

That works in the books (because they go into events in the Shire and all has not been well), but from a cinematic point of view they should have just cut it after the big party up at Gondor.
