The side that you're referring to as the recording side is actually a protecive layer. Under that layer you will find a thin foil. The thin foil is acuatlly what retains the data in the format of pits and grooves.

if you scratch the top of a cd r off with a pocket knife, it wont work any more, are you trying to destroy it???
