The three American cities with the highest proportions of gay and lesbian residents are, in order:
1. San Francisco, CA
2. Seattle, WA
3. Atlanta, GA
I don't know if this makes them "the best" to live in, but I imagine there must be some attraction. But just about any large city should have a sizable gay population, offering businesses and nightlife with us in mind.

This might suprise you but Minneapolis, MN would be a great place to live.
Active gay community, beautiful city, plus VERY open minded people live there.

Sydney, Australia. We have the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras each first Saturday of every March.
Sydney is a very easy-going, vibrant, beautiful and sexy city that is extremely gay friendly.

Boston, ma. has a lot to offer. a bit expensive. then there is provincetown, ma. it is the best. but you have to make your income during the summer months. if your a decent artist you will make a living. i almost took a job running a small motel there. i regret not taking it. that town is full of charisma. if you can, visit it. i recommend in the summer is best. but if your a bargain hunter than go just after labor day. amazing town. great beaches.

If you're looking for a place in the American Heartland Columbus, OH is alright. There's a strong GLBT community for the area.
