To be enlightened in a spiritual sense means to be free of lust, temptations, needs and urges. Just to be and understand the unity of it all. Free is the keyword. Free from everything. In some cases, the only way to enlightment is to go to face a mirror, put a flashlight in one`s mouth and flick the switch. Look at the mirror, and see one`s eyes fully enlightened... Seriously, finding enlightment is extremely difficult for us westerners in particularly, but even the search is well rewarding. I hope you will find your peace with the world.

As light is the opposite of darkness, so the philosophy of enlightenment....a 'light' upon the darkness. A metaphor for being 'in the dark' regarding something you know little or nothing about, and suddenly light (knowledge) 'enlightens' the thing. You absorb this new 'light/knowledge' and become "enlightened" It is not necessarily religious in nature.

the best god damn feeling in the world! I am close to be an enlightened person by buddhist teachings. I feel very confident about myself, I am always positive, I think of nothing negative. It feels like life is good. I do not believe what the world believes, I do not believe things till I see for myself if it actually exists. My mind becomes unique, I am apart from the world's thinking. I am thinking for myself. I don't follow the world, I follow myself. Therefore I feel I am stronger than the world in many ways.

In the allegory of Plato's cave, the enlightened one made it outside, and began to see outside the world of shadows and puppets.

He felt that he must go back to cave, and teach what he saw, even though he knew he wouldbe called a fool, ostracized, and possibly killed for his newfound knowledge.

That is what it is to be enlightened. To finally see things clearly. But, what Plato was teaching us is that to become enlightened also means that you have to teach what you have learned, no matter the consequences.

It's a different level of conscious experience.
You give up all control-- and your mind kind of dislocates from your head when you stop thinking and let your body act in the world.

Does not make for easy explanation,
it's like describing sex to a virgin.
