They got officially married in LA before going to Rome. They were ceremonially married in (the Odescalchi) castle about 1/2 hour outside of Rome.

They had a Scientology ceremony 25 miles outside Rome, but it was not legally binding.
One of their spokespeople claims they had already made the legally binding marriage agreement in the U.S. before the Italian ceremony. There's a chance that they haven't yet made it legally binding in the U.S. but will do so later.
