NO Xp Pro is probably the best os you can get currently but why are you changing to a Athlon? a intel pentium processor is better than a athlon but its your choice just a suggestion.

Hope i helped

Excellent choice AMD out benchmarks and out performs Pentium any day of the week!! Pentium has become the joke of the IT world!!! If you want to read something good go to the AMD web site and read about the law suite they have going against Pentium. Basicly computer companies (HP, Compaq, Gateway, Dell, and so on) started to use AMD CPUs in their computers, the reason being they are a far supperior CPU. It got so bad that everyone was buying the computers with AMDs in them and not the ones with Pentium in the. If you remember about 3-4 years ago all the computer companies stated powerd by AMD in there ads and comercials. All of a sudden this stopped and their comercials went to powerd by Pentium. It had nothing to do with AMD their CPUs blow Pentium away. What happened was that Pentium threatened to stop selling their CPUs to all these companies if they did not stop advertising powerd by AMD and made these companies say powerd by Pentium. That is why AMD has a major law suite against them. I have now started to see Dell has gone back to saying powerd by AMD evidently they dont care about Pentium and know who makes the far better CPU. The one thing you have to check if you plan on using the same board is if it will except the AMD. Also when ever you install ANY OTHER CPU (doesnt matter if it is a AMD or Pentium) on a board that already had a CPU on it you HAVE TO FORMAT the hardrive and reinstall the OS or it wont work. Each CPU has a unique identifier on it that goes into the BIOS and onto the hardrive. This is why when ever you switch out a CPU no matter who makes it you have to format the hardrive and reinstall the OS or it wont work. Because formatting the drive will make the drive lose everything be sure if you want to save all your files to get a good backup program that will backup to a cd or a dvd, so once you are done you can put them back!!! If your board will support the 64 bit AMD go for it, it kicks +ss. Whats nice with AMDs 64 bit is that it supports both 32 and 64 bit drivers so you wont have to worry about things not working on your computer and have to search for 64 bit drivers like the people that use Pentium's 64 bit CPU have to. Pentium's 64 bit only supports 64 bit drivers and programs so if a person cant find them they are S.O.L.

P.S. compy_500 doesnt know what he is talking about. You will have to format the drive and reinstall the OS there is NO WAY around this. Basically I explained why above!! He was right tho when he said that XP will run fine using either CPU. Just to let you know I have been a computer IT Tech for 6 years and have Comptia A+ Certification in computer building, repair, and troubleshooting!!!!
sorry compy_500 and thank you dvraz for telling him he has to reinstall the OS, punkrockerz evidently doesnt know to much about computers once again any IT Tech will tell you that AMD blows Pentium away. Also Microsoft came out about 7 or 8 months ago and stated that 2000 Professional IS THE BEST OS they have EVER come up with it has the least amount of problems compared to the rest of their OSs. He would know this if he ever went into their web site and read some of their articles. I have been using it for 5 years with no problems at all. Also 2000 and XP were wriiten about the same time. If you notice Microsoft hasnt written another OS other than for servers in 5 1/2 years. The reason for this is that they cant come up with anything better that 2000.

The Core 2 Duos are the fastest processors out right now, despite what other people are saying. I'll give benchmarks. Anyway, if you are on a budget and the E6300 Core 2 Duo is still too expensive, then I would suggest going to the Athlon 64 X2s, and only if you are on a super tight budget go to the Athlon 64s. If this is for a laptop, the still go with the Core 2 Duo, and on a budget go to the Turions.

You just need to make sure that the processor (AMD) your going to upgrade with is compatable with your current Motherboard. Also Your OS wont need (or it shouldn't need) any reinstalling since it is stored on your HD not anywhere else. Both AMD and Itnel Can be used On Windows XP

As long as you are using an AMD mobo you can switch to the Athlon. The CPU sockets on mobos are different for Intel and AMD processors. You will have to re-activate WinXP though!

I thought pentiums were the best CPU's to have. Why the switch? But "no"...you don't have to change any of your hardware for that switch.
