The two players on Cal who wear #10 are Marshawn Lynch and Desmond Bishop. How can two players who play on the field wear the same number? I know some teams run out of numbers, but why can't one of them just change?

HERE is your answer...........
First of all, it is not just #10!!!
There are over 102 players on Cal's roster.
From number 1-20, 17 of the numbers are worn by two players!!!
29 numbers are worn by two players. However, every shared number is worn by one on offense and one on defense.
I go to the Cal games. It is not a problem; just amusing.
Here is Cal's numerical roster.

Some schools dress more players than there are numbers available. With 85 scholarship players and all the walk-ons a team could easily run out of numbers. Retiring numbers of past great players reduces the possibilities even further. Thus the need to repeat numbers. For instance, the Gators have two # 7's. Although Steve Spurrier didn't like having his # 11 retired, even though he was honored, he thought that it should be used if requested by a current Gator player. GO GATORS!

Because its a california team. Dont want to hurt someones feelings or offend a gruop of people. Same idea that 2+2=6 I bet. Only in California.

some college teams have like 100 players. You factor in the fact they probably have a few numbers retired, and certain positions can't have certain numbers.

Holy crap they do.I never knew that I don't know how thats possible.
Maybe I guess if a team runs out of numbers (up to 99) well I guess the NCAA allows them to do it.

It's not illegal or anything. They just can't enter the game at the same time.
