Neandrathals were a subspecies of humans who were adapted for life in nothern climates during the ice age. they disappeared when h sapiens(our species) invaded their territory, slaughtered them and took over. Neandrathals probably didn't disappear completely, but probably interbred with the invaders, so we all probably have some neandrathal DNA in our genes.

Scientist's are still debating weather or not Neaderthal died out due to Cro-Mag coming into the picture and taking over, or by interbreeding. The answer is still out there, however, Neaderthal and birds, like all creatures on Earth, are brought into being and wrought into destruction by their environment. That is a universal truth, it's just a matter of detecting what in the environment has brought about the change. Intelligence isn't always a factor.

Intelligence is only one of many traits that can affect species survival. Presumably, Neandertals went extinct either because they were out-competed by Cro Magnons, or because they failed to adapt to changing environmental conditions. In any case, they were just one subspecies of human. Many individual species of birds have gone extinct since then, too.

The Neanderthals went too far.
Just to say, I am totally serious.
They were alive, not in the last ice age (when people crossed through Russia and Alaska to get to the Americas) but in one before that.
They went to Europe, while we decided to stay in Africa, middle East.
They had, by volume, a larger brain than we did, and they were super tough. They could do anything, but regenerate. They often got broken bones, etc. and easily healed back from them, without pausing and resting for weeks. They just continued their normal lives, and it healed.
We, had, by volume, smaller brains (and still do) but the difference is that they were smarter than us in certain ways (I can't remember in what) and we were/are smarter than them in communication. (The communication section of our brain is larger.)
I believe that Neaderthals are called Homo Sapien neanderthalensis, they are a subspecies.
Other than us, they are the most evolved of all humans.
They were at the same time as the Cro-Magnons. (From which we came.)
I may believe in evolution, but I am religious, and religion doesn't contradict evolution.
