If the problem is a deformed swimbladder, as in some fancy goldfish, the fish can live for years in a wonky state.

your goldfish could live or years with this disease or it could recover tomorrow
one thing you can do to help it is to lower your water level to
6 inches or so and that will make it easier on your fish

I had an oranda that lived on his back for almost 4 years.
I had to hold him to feed himm (in the water ofcourse)

I think it depends on what kind of fish. I had a tetra that died in a couple weeks. it would just of an on be on it's side.
