Most common reasons include
1. Seller decided not to sell
2. Seller decided to dispose of the item through another method
3. No bids met the seller's minimum

Perhaps he made a mistake when listing. (I've seen buyers who took off the Nintendo Wii they were selling because they've given away the information to pick up the preorder!) Yes, that's pretty stupid of them.

Possibly he set buyer restrictions. Certain buyer's bids will not be excepted, such as if you have bid on one of his items within a certain time limit, or have low feedback.

It might also be that the item you were bidding on was restricted. Homeschoolers (like me) are having serious issues with eBay over teacher's manuals. They are a restricted item on eBay because most have answer keys for the text and/or tests and they're afraid students will buy them for the purpose of cheating.

There are plenty of other restricted items on eBay - check out their list at: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html
