What's the difference between say a 2 reed and a 4 reed? Is it thickness? And if so, why would thickness matter, except that the higher reeds would last longer? Thanks in advance.

It's the thickness.

"A too thick reed sounds airy and is difficult to blow
A too thin reed sounds buzzy and high notes are flat or difficult to produce.
Harder does not mean better – flexibility is very important"

So it really varies from person to person - the link below has some brand suggestions.

I am not a player myself, but i know that thicker reeds are harder to produce a note from, they will last longer though... the measurement is something to do with the pressure it takes to move the reed a certain distance! haha i will try and be a bit more vague next time

A 4 reed is thicker, and it is harder to play with it (i could never do it), i think its supposed to control the air/sound better.
