In one of the episodes, Lisa says if you follow the clues, you can figure it out. So, does anyone have any theories as to where it's set and why? I have an idea, but want to see what anyone else thinks.

Fans of America's longest-running sitcom have been debating this since Maggie was a baby. Oh wait...

Well, anyway, Homer and family live in the town of Springfield. But, according to The Simpsons Archive, there are at least 71 nonfictional Springfields in 36 states around the country. This has left fans scouring the 350-plus episodes for clues to the town's exact location. Considering the enormous number of place names and geographical features referenced, this requires Ph.D.-level research. Many believe the show is set in Oregon, as creator Matt Groening grew up in Portland and many of the characters share names with that city's streets.

Tantalizingly, in the "Behind the Laughter" episode, the Simpsons are referred to as "a northern Kentucky family." The Simpsons Archive, however, explains that this episode treats the family as sitcom actors playing the parts of characters living outside the Springfield universe, and "really shouldn't be taken seriously." Plus, the location was actually changed in reruns. Other popular guesses include Ohio and Illinois. Former Simpsons director David Silverman once said the show was set in the fictional state of North Takoma.

In a 2004 Austin Chronicle article, a publicist for the show comments: "Matt had the Simpsons live in Springfield because it was the most common city name in the U.S. The writers 'toy' with the state location constantly, (thus) there is no specified state....

None. they have made it sparkling that they stay in Springfield yet they have by no capacity given the state. The tutor is intentionally evasive in regard to Springfield's region. there's a Springfield in over 0.5 of the states interior the U.S. The author has stated that the topography of the fictitious Springfield has plenty in worry-loose with Portland, Oregon, the city the place he grew up.

There are lot of Springfield's but I've always thought it was Illinois.

The uncertain location of Springfield is a long-running joke in the series, based on the fact that 34 states in the United States have at least one community with that name (several have more than one). Episodes frequently make fun of the fact that Springfield's state has never been revealed, by adding further conflicting descriptions, obscuring onscreen map representations, and interrupting conversational references. In actuality, the exact geographic location (and geographic features) of Springfield is probably best described as wherever (and whatever) suits the writers for a particular episode the best. It is perhaps best to say that the fictional Springfield is set in a fictional state with an exact location in the United States which will vary from episode to episode.

One could assume it is probably Oregon although the writers 'toy' with the state location constantly, (thus) there is no specified state...."

"The Pioneer Statue on the Simpsons (J. Springfield) is modeled after a statue on the University of Oregon's campus. You'll note that it has the same pose as it does on the show. The statue was cast in bronze in 1918 by A. Phimister Proctor.

"In addition, one of the shows mentions that the statue had its head cut off as a prank. This happened to a statue of a civil war veteran on the University's campus, sometime in the 1980s."

i believe it ended up being in missouri (sp?), as was indicated in one of their episodes within the past three years or so. springfield, mo, is a real city/state, and i think that's what it ended up being. not positive, but that's my guess. i'll keep watch to see if i'm right or not. the SIMPSONS is the absolute BEST show on tv of all time, and i will never change my opinion on that matter. there are so many obscure facts that they bring to light, like the pronunciation of "WAYNSCOTING," if you look it up, it's actually pronounced "WAYNSCOTTING" though it's not spelled that way. also the episode where bart fantasizes about being so obese that he makes it to the national media, and announces, "i wash myself with a rag on a stick," is actually true of several obese persons who have been in the eye of the media and must wash themselves with a rag on a stick. the simpsons is not just a cartoon, it's a slice of real life in america and those that don't "like" the show have obviously not watched the show enough to appreciate its value to society. TO ALL YOU DORKS WHO GAVE THUMBS DOWN, RIGHT BACK AT YA!!! LOSERS.

It is set in the fictional city of Springfield, although it has many similarities to Portland, Oregon. Also check the link under "Settings" for more information.
