Surely it can be kid/family-friendly by having both family games AND shooters, right? I mean, nintendo would probably dominate the other consoles if it had games like Medal of Honor and SOCOM: Navy Seals and others that nintendo itself creates, right?

It's a chicken and egg type thing.
Nintendo targets the yonger and family audience, so they only make those games and then only those people buy the console so games developers only make those sorts of games for it and so on and so on and so on

Nintendo, I'm sorry to say it, is made for children. They always wonder why they can't sell more and they don't understand why an older crowd won't buy it. Let's just take a look at a couple things...
1. The controllers suck. Those are the most god awful looking and feeling things. When you pick them up, no one other then a young child would want to hold on to that thing.
2. Like with the new Wii system, you know the thing is kid friendly when you can create your own little avatar to go along with the person that is using the system. It was the most foolish thing I have ever seen.
3. The graphics don't even begin to compare with the box 360 and the PlayStation 3. Nintendo has always been "family" oriented and I think that's how they will stay.
But all in all I do have to give them credit for Zelda. That's one wicked cool game. =) Best Wishes.

I think the problem is they can't seem to get most people to buy the system so they don't try. Seriously though it would do better if they had them. I got a GC just for Eternal Darkness, so a few good games would get the other audience. I guess they just gave up to the fact that XBOX also used that 4 port set-up. Much like they admitted they were going in a new direction with the wii because they couldn't compete with the direction of PS3 and Xbox360. They said they wanted to go after teh non-gamers and try to get them more comfortable with gaming. So maybe they will make a few more shooters now. I know there is supposed to be a Far Cry on the Wii so maybe this system will try to get everyone.

Basically, because they target younger kids. Also, the GCN probably didn't have the hardware to use some FPS games.
Nintendo can't have every developer make games for them. They spend a lot of money for all their developers to make all the 1st party games.
Also, simply because the GCN was a piece of crap IMO, and because Nintendo just has that kiddy image, the audience that would buy FPS don't have a GCN.
Hopefully the Wii can fix this. I heard Red Steel was pretty bad though...

The Medal of Honor series is too rehashed to be worthwhile, and I doubt SOCOM: Navy Seals is much better.
When Nintendo does have a FPS, it tends to be brilliant. Look at the Gamecube with Metroid Prime and the pseudo-FPS Resident Evil 4.

Nintendo would be one of the top if it had shooters but its more of a family system like you said. They got a few shooters like Metal Gear Solid On GC but its more of a tactic game. The new wii is going to have shooters tho so its gonna make nintendo dominate, or make it close enough.
can u please choose me as the best answer? i need 10 more points to get to the next level :)

my opnion is that Nintendo was trying to be like back in the days when videogames are still growing and Nintendo is still dominating. and besides companies like Sony and Microsoft are dominant to the shooting genre. i also think that Sony and Microsoft only wants business and Nintendo is all about family/friends fun, and not people who you play with online that you don't even know
