No, of course I would not do so. But I can understand that if a fine antique or specially made guitar came on the market, a collector who could afford it might well pay that much for what he considered to be a prime addition to his collection.

The best of everything should be preserved, and generally will be if collectors have a chance. We collectors are really preservationists, mostly out of our own self-interest of protecting our investments. Future historians will thank us.

So if you have inherited something fine and you don't see the use of it, go to the collectibles section of eBay and look for comparable items. What you have may be worth a great deal to someone with a collection.

Would you pay $20,000 for a rock that does nothing?

They are diamonds, and some people believe they are worth it.

Seriously, you can just walk into any jewelry store and buy all the $20K diamonds you want, but you CAN'T just walk into any music store and find a $20K guitar. This means to me that these guitars are far more rare, and thus far more valuable, than any diamond.

No you should play it. Just like a great violin if it isn't played it will lose its soul. Even the finest instruments need some love.
