The Mayan calendar is like an odometer in a car. When the odometer hits 100,000 miles it "turns over" and starts again at 00000. The car does not self-destruct, the odometer simply starts over again at zero. That is what will happen on 21 Dec 2012. The odometer will turn over and the Mayan long count will start over at zero. Nothing will happen. The Maya believed that the long count had turned over several times in the past. Indeed, this is the 12th "long day" as I recall, and the 13th "long day" will begin on 21 Dec 2012.

Note to previous poster: No, it is the Mayan calendar NOT the Aztec calendar. The Aztecs were a relatively "primitive" people compared to the Mayans where astronomy and mathematics are concerned. They had no calendar.

Note to later poster: That "predicting Cortes" thing is just myth. The Maya did no such thing.

Yes, SOME believe that, and they can keep on believing it. But if they are basing it on the Mayan Long Count Calendar ending on 12-21-2012, they are basing it on a misunderstanding. The calendar doesn't end. The 12th Baktun ends. That's like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000. The world didn't end then either, so the crazy people found another date to spread fear about-12-21-2012.

that is information is depending off a Mayan calendar (it really is the three hundred and sixty 5 days the calendar stops). i do not recognize why or how the Mayans got here to the conlusion that that is even as the earth might want to end. i do not take it that heavily. everybody idea the international might want to bring about 2000 or perhaps as the planets very last all aligned up. truth is, there's no understanding even as the earth will end. And im seeing way too many questions in this date on the following.

Well, Nostradamus predicted the beginning of the Third World War in 2007 followed by a devastating plague that will wipe out most of the population in the western world in the following years........he predicted accurately some things that did come true and some that did not....so I'm hoping the latter of course.
Now, the mayans were a very industrious and intelligent tribe for their time....they invented calendars that are very accurate today....and built temples that are still standing (Chichanitza in Mexico).....they were mysteriously wiped out and no one knows till this day how. Let's hope neither of their predictions come true.....I want to remain positive! But this is an interesting phenomenon I've heard about.

It's a possibility and if it's not the "end" so to speak I think the Earth will go through a drastic change or something super huge will take place; some of those ancients had knowledge that the people of today have long lost and probably will never regain

End of the world AS WE KNOW IT. Actually, predicted as the end of time. Mayans predicted the arrival of Cortes several hundred years earlier. They were off by one day. Described him and all.

Maybe it will be the end of the concept of time that has a linear motion and the beginning of non-linear time: just NOW in motion, not passing from before to after. Guess we'll see what happens.

Hi" I have heard of it and my thoughts to it is this, there is no one that truely knows when it is the end of time.
It says in the bible not even the angels in heaven knows only our heavenly father his self, so don't listen to to everything that you read or hear about, the only ting I can tell you is to pick your bible up you will find it in there only God him self knows the hour day and time.
