When a married person dies, their spouse continues to receive whichever person's benefits were greater.

Yes. But what happens is that once she reports the change in circumstances i.e. the death of her husband (which she certainly must not fail to do) - the Social Security Office will cancel hers, and instead she will receive the greater amount that her deceased husband had been receiving at the time of his death. In the unlikely event that her own social security payment is greater than his, I haven't run into this, but I am sure what would happen is that they would simply cancel his, and she would continue to receive whatever it is she was receiving at the time of his demise.

Yes she will get his check after he passes away. SS is to be notified of his death and then she will start drawing his check. I have saw some cases where she still gets her check as well but just not as much.

Also if he had a x wife out there prior to her, then that woman would get some of the check as well.

Yes, she can but has to apply for it. She will get 1 or the other not both. Only apply for his if his is more.
