I drive a front wheel drive sedan that needs new tires. I am debating whether I should:
a) Get all season tires.
or
b) Get snow tires, then buy all season tires after the winter season.

Do snow tires really make a huge difference? I don't put a price on safety, but if the improvement is negligible, I'm not sure its worth the extra cost.

I live in the north east BTW.

If you only plan on driving on plowed streets, then don't buy them. Snow tires do make a difference on packed snow. The main question is if the hassle and cost of changing tires is worth it.

Not all States allow studded snow tires due to there long term damaging effects on the pavement. Check your local laws on this 1st. I would personally go with all season tires and carry chains for use as weather dictates the need.

Quite frankly, I do not know much about tires. However, when I purchased my new tires, I went to several (lots) of tire stores and shopped for prices, as well as brand, and the most important question I asked was the ply..your vehicle dealer should know which ply to select. I would buy an all season tire with good ply.
(I am a female..so I naturally shop around!)
