First off, many Republicans are not against stem-cells. They are, however, against government money paying to create new stem-cells. They feel that the government researchers can work with the pre-existing lines. Most Republicans support allowing private corporations to fund the research and create the lines, they just do not believe the government should be doing it.
Second, it is alleged that there many be research that will lead to breakthroughs. However, there have been numerous other "breakthroughs" such as bone marrow research and cloning that didn't do a fraction of what was expected.

Republicans are NOT against "stem cells". ADULT stem cells, obtainable from umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, skin and fat, and even from deceased persons, have proven valuable in many cures, and new uses are being proven on a regular basis. President G.W. Bush (himself a Republican as I recall) authorized federal funding for research on 22 lines of EMBRYONIC stem cells. However, the use of Embryonic stem cells is not morally acceptable to several major faiths, including at least Roman Catholics and Lutherans (others please chime in, because there ARE more).
Embryonic stem cell research has so far wasted BILLIONS of dollars and has produced no cures whatever. California did a $3 BILLION bond issue for this purpose and has accomplished NOTHING to date.
A small majority of Missouri voters just voted for a constitutional amendment on this subject, which is sure to be challenged. Nearly all of the campaign funding in favor of stem cell research was provided by the PRIVATE Stowers Foundation, which will reap the financial benefits of taxes imposed on nearly HALF of the voters who voted against it. How's that for taxation without representation?
While Democrat McCaskill (who also favors partial birth abortion) supported this issue in her sucessful campaign against Senator Jim Talent, you can be sure that many Democrat people voted against it as a matter of faith and morals.

I am rolling my eyes.
Are you just this uninformed or just stupid.
NO one is against stem cell research. Bush has been the only president to fund it at all, Bill side stepped it. The only stem Cell research that is not funded by the fed is embryonic.
Embryonic stem cell research is all so showing that they can only cause cancer not cure it.
By the way Bush is not catholic.

do you bother to read any of the answers on here, or do you just spout off any untruth you can think of?
We support stem cell research and we are even paying for it. Do you own homework on the facts. I'm tired of repeating myself to rocks.

You need to stop watching the liberal news and find out that there are many other ways to get stem cells than by killing babies. It can't "save thousands" if it is killing thousands.
