At IU, there is a 3 year post-graduate residency program in Cardiothoracic Surgery. This would occur after the 4 years in Medical School, and the 3-5 years as an undergraduate (since you may enter medical school after having a minimum of 3 years undergraduate study).

This means you will spend 10-12 years to get there.

I've included a link to interviews with Cardiovascular surgeons, some of whom are Cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as links to the IU School of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine's pages for Cardiothoracic Surgery residents/fellows.

As far as income, it really depends on where you are, how good you are, etc. The range I've seen said $400K - $1.5M (which sounds great until you consider the cost of your student loans...).
