I have a 2002 Olds. Alero. I have been having problems with starting it up, and now it is broke down. It will turn over, but it won't start. I originally thought that it might be the battery, but now I am not so sure, since it does turn over, and everything inside the car turns on. Anyone know what's going on, and/or how much it will cost?

I reread my question and realized that I don't have enough info. I know it's not the battery. I have tried to mash the gas, but thanks for the suggestion. I have gas in it, so don't say to put gas in it please. I just got the oil change, etc. a couple of weeks ago, so I know it's not something that needs to be put in it. I'm sorry, but I am not a car person, I don't know what else to say about it, except that it won't start.

If it will turn over and everything comes on, the battery is not the problem. How many miles are on it? You will need to have it checked out by a mechanic. Not enought details here to tell you what is wrong. Could be anything from electrical to timing belt broke to control module to the engine computer itself. Get it checked out.

As a mechanic, I look at the basics first. Is there spark? How about fuel, and last is the compression good. Since checking those things requires some understanding and experience as well as special tools, it should go to a professional. Since the problem came on over time, it is not likely the timing belt or chain. You probably need a good tune up and fuel filter. I'd guess that would cost $150 to $250 depending on what all the shop does.

This hard on here. You may try pushing down on the gas pedal about half way and see if it start. If, it does, it may be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), no promise. It most likely a sensor, but, which one? MAP? TPS? It just hard with what you give, sorry.
If, the check engine light was coming on, someone may be able to put a code reader on it and find out. Not real sure what they would charge, maybe $50. I not familiar with this car, if, it have a Distributor it may be the Pickup Coil inside.

Having gas in the tank does not mean it is getting to the engine. Your fuel pump may not be working, that is the first thing I would check.
