When dogs used to sleep on long grass and reeds, they would walk around in circles to flatten the grass and make a nest.

it dates back to when dogs were just wild, they use to circle an area about a quarter mile wide , to sniff for danger, before they slept. now over time its just widdled its way down to a small just around them circle.
