No offense. Because the white man tried to annihilate them, that's why.

most natives are on reserves. Like in Arizona and New Mexico. It all depends on the tribe. Most reserves are like other countries, very different. Where I am from (Canada) if you leave the reserve, quite often you go alone, and you don't go back to live there. Sometimes your own people will not want to accept you because you left to go live in the white world. Its slowly getting better though. It used to be that it wasn't cool to be educated, so alot of people dropped out of school, and stayed on the reserve. Now alot more kids are getting educated, and spreading out, at least on the reserve that I live near. Was your friend adopted? They used to do that, and now they try to keep children in their own culture.
If you are looking for background on your friend, you can first find his birth name and tribe, then try contacting the band offices . Try to arrange to speak to an elder, they are the ones in charge who will take him and mentor him in his culture.
I think another reason is that alot of traits are not really dominant when mixed with other races Like my mom looks native but with green eyes, my bro is dark with green eyes and the rest of us look white, except we get really dark tans, and we don't get sunburns.
Good luck!

The white people took their land, killed their warriors, innocent women, and children along the way. In the end, the U.S. take their land to build railroads and civilization and then start to feel bad for it, so they give them a little bit of land that nobody wants in the middle of nowhere. They're all herded onto this small plot of land where white people hope to never hear from them again.

by the way, there are a lot of blacks in the U.S. with Native American blood in them.

Well mainly because they were killed of by the people who took over America. The few that were left are now mixed heritage with other nationalities that live here.

No offense just telling it like it is.

i think there is getting to be less and less of us because of us breeding with other races. (which isn't a bad thing.) thus resulting in the depletion of the full native american race.

most of them live on reservations today. a friend of mine grew up on one. what the american gov did to them was genocide in my opinion. the navaho indian nation in the southwest is larger then texas and a shining example of their perservence to maintain thier culture today.

because they've been pushed away into little reservations that generally keep them separate from American society at large.

Some scholars say they have again reached their preColumbian levels, BTW.
