She's already got a laptop, a camera, a journal, and etc. I need something creative. Something she may not have thought of. Something I'm not thinking of. All suggestions welcome. (And whatever it is, it has to be able to be cleared through airport security.) :)

This is a fun question to answer. It's also a tough one. Relax about it. Remember she is going to another country. When she is over there, she will like remembering you by something that is you, and that is American. Maybe ask yourself what you would like to have. What gift is an expression of you. Something that expresses your interest and hobbies. Something that is you and where you are from. Do you have pictures of the two of you doing something really great? Perhaps get her something nice that can have that picture included in it. A great scrap book is also another idea. Just make it personal. Something that holds a memory the two of you love to keep.

I thought of a compass to find her way home, but I guess you'd convert that to 2006 it'd be a GPS device. An atlas, or pictures of America or your state.
Many of the items have been suggested.
I'd second the phone card idea, as I have been overseas and calls home are $$$$.

Hmm, how about some prepaid long distance phone cards? Or a personalized photo album for her to start keeping her memories of Italy in?

Have you seen the picture frames that you can record your voice on? Maybe a pic of you and her with a special message from you that she can listen too whenever she needs to. Believe me, she will need to hear the sound of your voice. I think Hallmark has them.
