can anyone explain picking up the pile? I don't get it when people put deuces and jokers sideways.

When they put the 2 or jack across it means they froze the pack you can only pick it if you have 2 or more cards of what they put down.
So the pile is frozen it goes round and round and the guy before you puts down one ace, and if you do not ahve more than one ace in your hand you won't be able to pick the pile, if you do have more than one ace in you hand then you can pick the pile up. (of course assuming you can or already ahve melded)
