You cant convert a phone line slot into an ethernet one.
Your laptop seriously doesn't have a e-slot? wow it must be old...
One way is to buy a wireless router so that you can wirelessly connect..the other is to buy a pcmcia card.

A wireless router is just a box that allows you to connect your computers to the internet wirelessly. You should be able to find one for 25bucks. Something like a d-link. Its very easy to setup. Just make sure that your laptop is wireless capable, if its not, then you have to buy yourself a wireless adapter. Like a card or just a usb adapter. If you really are "an idiot" go with the d-link. Its just easy and reliable. Its just hooking your dsl modem to the router and the router to your desktop pc. Setting up the wireless wont take you time at all. Hope this helps.

A router is a device that hooks up one network (the one in your house) to another (the Internet). Your DSL modem gives you access to the Internet network, and that would be good if you only have one computer. If you've got two computers, and therefore a "network" then you need a router.

I've had good and bad luck with all sorts of routers. They all seem to die eventually. For the wireless, I like the Netgear and Dlink models. The Linksys routers used to be great for me, but the latest versions seem to die for me.

Chances are, you can use the default settings to get your router going. However, it won't be secure, meaning that your neighbors can use it for their internet access, and maybe even see what you're doing on your computer (not good).

You need to find a person who can help you do this -- if I was living near there, I'd probably take 30 minutes to "do it right". If you were my friend I'd do if for return favors ("free").

It sounds to me like your DSL modem is actually a DSL modem/Router and it quite possibly already has a wireless connection built in, if so all you would need would be a wireless usb adapter for your laptop if it doesn't have a wireless network card (802.11a or 802.11b or 802.11g or 802.11n) built in

By the way, using your terms, an "idiot" could easily set-up a wireless connection, especially under XP, however, it would not be a secure connection (your neighbor could surf on your connection if they wanted to).[like the guy above me said]
