You would splatter all over the floor like a mushy pizza.

Hmmm, well it's too bad ur not a little higher up. Coz at 22,236 miles up you'd be in geosynchronous orbit. There at that height you would indeed be weightless, where the force of gravity is canceled by the centrifugal force of the earth's rotation. At that height, you wouldn't need to do anything except wait till somebody on the top floor rescues you by finding a way to get the elevator door open.
Unfortunately, at merely 12 miles up, the earth's gravity would still be stronger and pull ur elevator back to earth, (excluding a "friction brake"). You would not be weightless except for that brief period of acceleration (described by one of ur other answerers) as you fell back to earth.
However, by the nature and tone of ur question, I feel you thought 12 miles up was high enough to experience this geosynchronous orbiting effect. Especially considering the similarity of ur question to the recently popular theories of building a space elevator. This theory of building an elevator into space is a valid idea and is presently being worked on by many engineers and physicists. Some predictions have estimated a working space elevator to be complete and operational by the year 2018.
Hope you pick my answer. Hehehee

WEll if you are indeed 12 miles up your not gonna be weightless the entire time. The elevator will accelerate for some period until it hits terminal velocity. Once this happens you will cease to be weightless and will just be on the floor of the elevator.
Probably the only thing you could do is to hit the emergency button and hope the brakes kicked in. Which would probably throw you to the cieling very hard and you'd be hurt badly.

If indeed there was a building that high, there would be a friction brake that would stop it quickly and you would not have to worry. Opening the door might be a problem, but read and follow direction.

I'd like to say that I'd pray... but since I have a fear of falling, chances are I'd pass out from fear before I had a chance to. Which would be good - because that way I'd be unconscious when we hit bottom.

I would enjoy about 3 minutes of zero gravity, where I could twist around in mid air to kiss my butt goodbye.
