Heat is absorbed by the particles of the substance causing their motion to increase. As the motion of the particles increases they are able to break the forces of attraction holding them together and the move further apart. So solids lose their regular pattern and become liquids; liquids break their attractions holding them together as a liquid and the particles move very far apart and become gases
