The writers have said that they know the beginning and they know the end. They know some of the major things they want to cover in between there. They have also stated that they don't create a new mystery without knowing the answer. That being said, there are things that are changed or altered or created at the last minute. Not everything is planned out, but they have an outline.

This is a very popular theory, after the producers have nixed other rumours, e.g. this is all a dream, the 'survivors' are all dead and it is a kind of purgatory, that it is a reality TV show, etc. Even the guy who plays Mr. echo thinks the writers are just winging it.
They have to resolve a few issues, otherwise the programme wil start to lose viewers.

I think so!
I was really into the 1st Series but its just got silly and I'm not going to bother watching S3.
My theory is there are 12 writers and they all get a show each. The fact they don't talk to each other and make sure their stories match is irrellevent!

Well, they keep saying no but it is meandering along isn't it? I think they're going to paint themselves into a corner soon where all the story lines get connected but big holes start appearing in the timescales or logic or something like that.

that's what I've always thought! but apparently the guys who came up with the idea of lost thought the whole thing up in 3 hours one day when they were bored...or so I've heard. imagine though, one day you're just hanging out with a friend talking about nothing and you come up with an idea that makes you millions! so cool :D

Yeah, they were expecting the series to die before they would have to come up with an explanation for the polar bear and everything.
